In the state of Texas, USA, a migrant from Guatemala spent eight hours in the woods to avoid arrest by immigration and customs enforcement. A man named Raimundo Kalka was spotted by agents in Guatemala when he was returning to the woods after their vehicle stopped at a traffic light.
Many local residents became witnesses to this detention and described Kalka as a hardworking individual. He was originally deported in 2013, after which he was arrested in 2024 on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, according to a document from the Western District of Texas.
After the detention, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristen N. New, stated on the agency's website that "you can seek asylum, but do not hide; be on the ground or at the home of an activist-judge. If you are here illegally, immigration and customs can find you and arrest you, and then deport you." Currently, he is in a temporary detention facility in the town of Karnes, Texas.
CNN requested additional information from U.S. immigration and customs services regarding this arrest, although it is unclear whether he has legal representation.
